Dodgers: Gavin Lux Impresses In Season Debut
The Dodgers have a few questions about their roster that should be answered in the coming weeks. The issues that many expected the bullpen to fix appear to be resolved with the Craig Kimbrel acquisition. The starting rotation is still a big question mark though, and many wonder how long they will hold up.
But the place of Gavin Lux was a big question coming into this season. Given a runway for the starting second base job last season, Lux very much needed to earn his spot on the Dodgers roster this time around. Some trades and his play in the outfield got him that bench spot.
But Lux started at second on Opening Day, much to the surprise of many. He rewarded that faith in his by driving in a pair of runs and earning a pair of walks. After the game, Dave Roberts spoke about his performance and the potential that Gavin has. (quotes via The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya)
“He’s finally understanding who he is as a baseball player. He’s not trying to be someone he’s not, and when he stays within himself he can do some special things.”
Lux went 1-for-2 with a single in the 4th inning that drove in a pair of runs. He did that by effectively controlling the strike zone and being selective. The Dodgers infielder spoke about that after the game.
“Control the strike zone, wait out for a good pitch to hit.Y eah, that’s my game for sure. If you look at the guys one through eight in front of me, I don’t have to do a whole lot. I think for me, it’s about being who I am and not trying to do too much like I have in the past.”

When he’s at his best, Lux is very selective and can drive the ball to all parts of the field. That’s the guy that the Dodgers are hoping for this year. And if he can round out this lineup with an approach like that, only good things can happen.
