Dodgers Nearing Deal With Joe Kelly, Who Will Be Removed From 40-Man Roster?

According to MLB Insider Robert Murray, the Los Angeles Dodgers and fan favorite Joe Kelly are close to a reunion.

In bringing back Marachi Joe, however, the Dodgers must make room on the 40-man roster. Late in November, that spot was taken after the Dodgers brought back Jason Heyward on a 1-year, $9 million deal.

The Dodgers have two realistic options for opening up a spot on the 40-man roster: either trade someone from it or release someone outright from it. With this deal nearly done, it is more likely the Dodgers release someone to clear that spot.

Who Could the Dodgers Release From Their 40-Man Roster?

Victor Gonzalez would be the prime candidate for release in this instance. Ever since he helped the Dodgers bring home the title in 2020, he has struggled to stay on the major league roster. Whether through injury or poor performance, Gonzalez has not been able to replicate that 2020 magic.

The far less likely release candidate would be the team’s captain Austin Barnes. His struggles at the plate have been no secret as of late. After protecting Hunter Feduccia from the Rule 5 Draft, the Dodgers are currently carrying four catchers on the 40-man roster – which is a lot. This would come as a shock to everyone, but, looking at the tea leaves, would not be impossible.

Whoever the team releases in a corresponding move can be brought back on a minor-league deal, which is another reason why Gonzalez would be more likely to be let go.

  1. It’s possible one or more 40-man bodies get traded which would open a roster spot or two before the contracts fir Hayward and Kelly are finalized.

    1. Agree. Batting average 2022 .212 and in 2023 .180. This is the major leagues and that is a very low batting average. Kershaw is not even signed for this coming year and they have a great catcher hitting up a storm at AAA. It is time to move on from Barnes.

  2. With all the rumored trades it may well be a couple of 40-man spots open up before Kelly and Heyward officially sign

  3. If the signings projected occur, there is more than one roster spot on the 40 man that need to be open. I am sure when the dust settles out, many of we Dodgers fans will be smiling and shaking our heads at what’s occurred.

  4. Zero chance the Doidgers will just release Barnes in this way, Gonzalez, Vanasco, Varland and Brian Hudson give them 4 spots they could clear if they need to.
