Dodgers: New LA Broadcaster Shares That He Represents More Than Just Himself With New Gig

The Los Angeles Dodgers added another voice to their broadcast crew last week. LA announced they would be adding commentator Stephen Nelson to their TV broadcast.

Nelson will fill in for Joe Davis while working as the lead commentator for the FOX broadcast.

Many fans were worried about Davis’ status when the announcement was made about Nelson, but LA has nothing to fear about the man who replaced the late-great Vin Scully.

Nelson, a former KTLA intern, joined the KTLA morning show earlier this week to discuss his new gig and what it means to have an Asian American in a high-profile job with such a historic organization.

“I can tell you what it means to me, which is everything. I think being fourth-generation Japanese American…growing up again in Los Angeles, my mother worked at the Japanese American National Museum in Downtown LA, I kind of got to grow up there too. So my culture has been a part of my life forever.
So now to be the only Asian American working for a team in Major League Baseball as somebody who is standing on a lot of shoulders as a fourth-generation Asian American, I now want to be somebody else’s shoulders down the line. The same way you (Frank) paved the road, and Rob Fukuzaki, you guys paved the road for me. I want to continue to do that for the next generation. And hopefully, I can pass the torch on to another wave of incredible young Asian American broadcasters. That’s at the forefront of my mind every time I go live on a show or live for a game, it’s make sure I represent properly and proudly.”

The 33-year-old will join Dodgers eight-year manager Dave Roberts as the only Asian-Americans to hold high-profile sports jobs.

The Southern California kid will call more than 50 games for the Boys in Blue whenever Davis is occupied with his other gig.

The Dodgers have had one of the best commentators of all time call games for them, and for LA to choose Nelson even as a fill-in speaks volumes about what they see in him.

Nelson called MLB games with Apple TV last season, the MLB Network, and works play-by-play for the NHL Network.

We’re excited to hear Nelson for this upcoming season and congratulate him on a huge accomplishment.

  1. Welcome Stephen. Too bad we have to share Joe with a nation wide audience but he is one the best.
