Dodgers News: Andrew Friedman Expects LA to Add Starting Pitcher, Be Aggressive This Trade Deadline

With the trade deadline less than a week away, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman still is measuring up the market. However, he remains confident that the Dodgers will be aggressive come August 1st, and they already showed that by trading for Kiké Hernández on Tuesday.

Friedman addressed LA’s deadline plan with media on Monday, before the team went out and traded for Hernandez in likely the first move of multiple for LA. Bill Plunkett of the OC Register was among those to report where Friedman stands this deadline.

“The market is still defining itself in terms of who the sellers are and exactly who’s available, Friedman said. “The only thing I know is our mindset is to be aggressive and try to add.”

He went on to say that he’d be “surprised” if the team didn’t add a starting pitcher before next Tuesday’s 3 PM PT deadline, but who that might be remains up in the air.

“There’s still a lot to be defined in these next seven, eight days that will get at answering that question in a more thoughtful way. … The long and short is the only thing I know at this point is that our mindset is to be aggressive and we have a lot of depth in our system, which is a helpful thing.”

While Friedman likes bargains and hates overpaying, he has made notable trades at the deadline during his tenure with the Dodgers.

In 2017, he acquired Yu Darvish from the Rangers, and Darvish helped the Dodgers get to the World Series before the Astros exploited him. The next year he acquired Manny Machado from the Orioles and Dylan Floro from the Reds, and they played an integral role in the Dodgers’ run to the World Series. In 2021, he brought Max Scherzer and Trea Turner to the Dodgers, and they helped their new team get to the NLCS. Last season when Friedman was quiet at the deadline, he brought in Chris Martin to bolster the bullpen.

For certain, with the Dodgers having clear needs, Friedman will find trades to help the Dodgers go deep in the postseason. The Hernandez trade is just the beginning.
