Dodgers News: Jonny DeLuca Placed on Injured List, Justin Bruihl Optioned in Series of Roster Moves

The injury bug continues to hit the Dodgers. During their wild game on Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays, outfielder Jonny DeLuca was forced to leave the game in the bottom of the eighth in what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

He will now be moved to the injured list, and we all wish him a speedy recovery. The rookie outfielder had been given a chance at the big-league level due to the need for another right-handed batter in the lineup.

Additionally, the Dodgers decided to option LHP Justin Bruihl — who struggled in the 9th inning of Tuesday’s comeback win — and call up RHP Tyson Miller.

On the year, DeLuca was hitting .262 with two home runs and six runs batted in. He had started to look much better over his last few games after being recalled a week ago, so the injury is unfortunate.

Luckily for LA, they made a trade for utilityman Kiké Hernandez prior to the game. He can now take over the spot on the roster. With Hernandez returning to Los Angeles, it may have been possible that Deluca was sent back down to the minors anyway.

Hernandez rejoins the Dodgers after spending two and a half seasons with the Boston Red Sox. He has been having his worst year as a pro but the Dodgers apparently saw something on tape that they believe they can fix. On the year, he is hitting .222 with six home runs and 31 runs batted in. Hernandez is making his 2023 debut on Wednesday.

The team is hoping that Hernandez can help them with their issues against left-handed pitching. However, he hasn’t been great this season. He holds an OPS of just .652 with one home run and seven runs batted in against southpaws.

If he can turn things around with the Dodgers, it could provide a big boost to this club. His ability to play multiple positions around the field is a major bonus, and a reason why the team wanted a reunion.

Hernandez was a fan favorite during the six years that he spent with LA, and he became known as one of the energizers for the team.

LA is banking on this low-risk move to give them some major upside as the season goes on.

As for Miller, the former Brewer acquired earlier this season is getting an opportunity with LA. He didn’t allow a run in his two appearances in Triple-A, and the Dodgers feel ready to give him a shot. Let’s see if he can help this bullpen.
