Dodgers News: Clayton Kershaw or Bobby Miller Will Start Postseason Game 1, Says Dave Roberts

The Dodgers have their Game 1 starter. Well, almost.

On Wednesday, ahead of their series finale against the Detroit Tigers, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was asked about the postseason starting rotation. While we already knew Bobby Miller was going to start one of the first two games, Roberts confirmed that his competition was none other than 10-time All-Star and three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw.

Roberts added that he wouldn’t be making the decision yet because he doesn’t have to, but it sounds like both have shown more than enough to get that start.

Miller is taking the mound on Wednesday, and then could get one or two more starts this regular season, per Roberts. As for Kershaw, he’s going to pitch on Saturday, and then is scheduled to go the next Saturday, the penultimate day of the regular season.

Both would be on full rest to start Game 1 of the NLDS at that point.

As I’ve been saying for almost three months now, Miller deserves that Game 1 start. He’s continued to improve in every one of his starts, and has the stuff to mow down a lineup in a postseason opener.

While I love Clayton Kershaw, his shoulder issues are clearly bothering him, and the Dodgers don’t want to potentially get off on a bad foot in a best-of-five series by going down 0-1.

Miller gives the team the best chance to win, and I think he’ll only get better with the adrenaline of playing under the bright lights of a postseason game.

That means Kershaw would get Game 2, which is a pretty nice luxury to have.

For now, though, we’ll see how the two pitch the remainder of this regular season, and see what Roberts ultimately decides to do.
