Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Reveals Conversation With Bobby Miller That Has Paid Dividends

The importance of rookie Bobby Miller to the Los Angeles Dodgers can’t be understated. If the Dodgers want any chance of gong deep in the postseason, Miller must perform well and turn into a true ace of this team.

Fortunately, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts talked about a conversation he had with the rookie earlier this season that has really helped turn things around. After his start against the San Diego Padres last month, Roberts spoke to Miller about controlling his emotions better, and has seen him already make good on that conversation.

“That’s part of the job as a coach, to coach the player up when they need it, and then it’s more on the player to take the information and apply it,” Roberts said. “To his credit, he really understood the conversation.”

Miller has been great this season as he learns how to win at the major league level. Miller reminds Dodger fans of young Orel Hershiser, Clayton Kershaw, and Walker Buehler. However, Miller’s pitches are of better quality than Hershiser and Kershaw’s pitches as rookies. Miller has five major league quality pitches, and he’s continuing to learn how to mix them better to keep the hitters off balance.

Miller has been doing better at controlling his emotions. He learned he must figure out how to escape jams himself. He can’t rely on the marvelous Dodger bullpen because his fellow pitchers will be tired in the playoffs. He has gained confidence in his ability to compete at the major league level.

In his few remaining starts in the regular season, Miller must refine his command to succeed in the playoffs. He will be counted on for important innings in October.
