Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Discusses Why 2019 Dodgers are Better

The Yankees are in Los Angeles to face the Dodgers, and with that, comes a lot of media attention. On that note, Alex Rodriguez is out at Dodger Stadium as part of FS1’s coverage, and he had a conversation with LA manager Dave Roberts.

In this particular clip, the question is pretty simple, “why will the third time be the charm for the Dodgers?” Doc Roberts responded.

I think the thing is that people learn from past experiences — or past failures namely. And I think if you look back at the last two World Series, those are failures. A credit to our guys is ‘how can we get better?’ And I think that’s conducting good at-bats, winning pitches — staying in the strike zone… I think that we collectively have been better all year.

Sitting at 85-45 on August 24th does back up Doc’s statement that the team has been collectively better in 2019 — 12 walk-off wins notwithstanding. Of course, the 2017 ball club hit the 85 win mark on August 16th, so take that as you will.

While the overall quality of at-bat is very much better in 2019, the bullpen remains the biggest question mark ahead of October, and Dave’s decision to focus on the positives with Arod and company is only telling part of the story.

  1. This Dodger team has been in an offensive slump and is still winning. This is a testament to the team’s starting pitching but also the Bullpen. Jansen must get his head straight and not think of his Glory Days but reality where he must throw other pitches.
Baez, Kelly, and Garcia have all found recent success and all throw several changes of pace and eye level pitches. Major League players can hit whatever you throw if they guess correctly. The craft of pitching requires the pitcher to change the pitch and location so the hitter isn’t sitting on that pitch and location because they will hit it.
This team offensively 1-8 when they have their most effective lineup is as talented as any team the Dodgers have had in recent memory. I believe one weak spot is Roberts as he has lost at least one game each WS due to poor pitcher management. When talented teams are playing against each other a poor pitch manager will lose every time.
I think the improvement of Kelly and Baez gives us some hope along with some of the young pitchers that may make the roster.

  2. mmm……re-runs of past years……….still can’t win games when it counts……batters looked pathetic…….again , the batters are not prepared to be competitive…..overwhelmed by another AL team….announcers say Judge and everyone listens and who do we have that even gets a mention,,,,,,,Dodgers as a team doesn’t strike fear upon any team…..they are not hungry, they play lakadasical, and are sorely lacking some team leadership…..thank management for a team with no chemistry…….too many bench players and not enough quality starters…….musical chairs will not win a world series……..70 years and Dodgers really need help……..go Dodgers for a better future
