Dodgers News: Dustin May Very Open to a Postseason Bullpen Role

The Dodgers are going to be getting back some legitimate firepower before the season is over. With so many guys set to return from the 60-day injured list, it’s no surprise that they felt comfortable standing firm at the trade deadline. They’re set to get back at least 3 arms before the end of the year, and they’re elite.

Walker Buehler and Blake Treinen returning should be a huge boost to the team. The Dodgers bullpen needs that elite help, and Treinen can provide that. Getting Buehler back means they have their big game starter in the fold too.

But they will also be getting Dustin May back into the mix very soon. After undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2021, May is finally nearing his return to the big league mound. And it sounds like he would be open to taking a postseason bullpen role if that is where he is needed. (quotes via OC Register)

“I’m fine either way, as I’ve said in the past. It would be nice to start but it’s also nice to pitch out of the ‘pen and contribute in any way possible. I have open ears and eyes to whatever comes my way.”

D-May is not new to a mixed role in his big league career. Since making his debut in 2019, the Dodgers hurler has appeared in 19 games as a starter, and 12 as a reliever. That elite stuff that he has plays up anywhere the team needs him.

Right now, there is potential to get May 6-7 starts for the Dodgers before the regular season is up. That could be enough to build him up as a starter should they need him. But with guys like Tony Gonsolin, Julio Urias, and Tyler Anderson performing the way that they are, May might be best used in relief come October.
