Dodgers News: Freddie Freeman Reacts to Mookie Betts’ Hot Streak

The Dodgers roster has multiple future Hall of Famers on it. With so much greatness on one team, the praise is passed around a lot when someone does well. And no one is doing better than Mookie Betts over the last few months.

After another multi-hit game onSaturday night, Betts is now hitting .345 with 16 home runs and 33 runs batted in over his last 36 games. While Betts has been hot, the rest of the Dodgers have only caught up more recently, leading to a 14-5 record since June 20th and overtaking the Diamondbacks for first place in the NL West.

Betts’ teammates are all amazed by the run he’s on. First baseman Freddie Freeman can’t believe what he’s watching every night.

“It seems like every swing, he’s barreling up the ball,” Freeman said recently. “Sometimes breaks can come at the wrong time, but I think Mookie found something in his swing and he’s been able to lock it in and have an unbelievable what, 30, 35 games now? It’s been that special. It’s been fun to watch.”

Betts has had one of the best first halves of his career this season. He has 26 home runs, which was a career high at the All-Star break. His OPS currently is .983. The only time his OPS was higher at the break came during his MVP season in 2018.

The praise in the clubhouse comes from even more than Freeman. Manager Dave Roberts says that what Betts does for the team is invaluable.

“It’s pretty impressive, the first half that he’s had,” Dave Roberts said. “I kind of made the comparison weeks ago to Rickey Henderson … he steps in the box and he’s already in scoring position. It’s instant offense.”

His hot streak may or may not have correlated to when he started playing on the infield dirt a lot more often, but whatever the reason is, the Dodgers are hoping the stretch can continue through October.
