Dodgers News: Recently-Added Kolten Wong Making a Huge Impact at AAA
It was a transaction that may have flown under the radar given the frenzy of the trade deadline just a few days earlier, but the Los Angeles Dodgers signed second baseman Kolten Wong to a minor league contract on August 9 after the two-time Gold Glover was released by the Seattle Mariners.
After a brief stop in Arizona to play for the Dodgers’ Arizona Complex League squad, he made his way to the Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers earlier this week.
And since then, the 32-year-old has been absolutely raking.
He’s hit .539 with one home run and six RBI in just three games with OKC — he has played five total for the organization, including two in Arizona — and he’s posted a 1.495 OPS early on.
And that home run?
That wasn’t exactly a cheap one either.
Wong is not on the 40-man roster so it’s unlikely he comes up to Los Angeles this season — even when rosters expand from 26 to 28 on September 1 — but he still could be a name to keep an eye on for 2024.
LA’s middle infield had been a sore spot this season — an issue that led them to acquire Amed Rosario and Kiké Hernandez ahead of the trade deadline — and if Wong continues to hit at his current clip, it may be worth it for the Dodgers to bring him back next season, potentially on the 40-man at that time.
Most teams always need infield depth, and Wong’s showing early that he can provide that.
UPDATE:
J.P. Hoornstra of the Orange County Register reports that Wong is expected to be called up when the rosters expand on Sept. 1.
