Dodgers Officially Sign Ryan Brasier, Place Dustin May on 60-day IL

Thursday is the first day the Dodgers are able to place injured players on the 60-day injured list, automatically removing them from the 40-man roster. The team wasted little time.

The Dodgers officially announced the re-signing of relief pitcher Ryan Brasier to a two-year contract. As previously reported, the right-hander receives a $9 million guarantee with the potential to earn up to $13 million based on performance incentives.

In order to make room for Brasier on the 40-man roster, a corresponding move was needed. Dustin May, who underwent surgery last July to repair the flexor tendon in his right elbow, was placed on the 60-day injured list.

The move comes as no surprise. May, 26, is not expected to pitch this season. The Dodgers’ front office could effectively plan its roster around the absences of May, Tony Gonsolin and Nick Frasso. All three pitchers underwent major surgery in 2023 that will prevent them from starting the season on the active roster.

To that end, it was also no surprise that Clayton Kershaw also reported to camp Thursday and updated reporters on his health after taking a physical. The Dodgers agreed to terms with Kershaw on a one-year contract with a player option for 2025. Once the terms of that contract become official, he’ll go on the 60-day injured list as well.

Brasier appeared in 39 games last season with the Dodgers after being claimed off waivers from the Boston Red Sox and agreeing to a minor league contract. He logged an ERA of 0.70 and a WHIP of 0.72, helping the Dodgers absorb the losses of veteran right-handers Daniel Hudson and Blake Treinen to injuries.

  1. I realize these rehabs can drag on, but how is it that MLB Trade Rumors thinks Dustin May is “expected back midseason? while you say he is not expected to pitch this season? Which is it?
