Dodgers Prospect Roundup: Diego Cartaya, Eddys Leonard, Bobby Miller, Jose Ramos and More

While the lockout killing a lot of the baseball news, the minor leagues remain pretty active. It mostly revolves around players not on the 40-man roster since those players are locked out. Any player on the 40-man roster is frozen from any trades or roster actions but we can still follow their off-season.

This article will recap what happened with the Dodgers’ prospects in the month of December.

Minor League Rule 5 Draft

In the 2021 Minor League Rule 5 Draft, the Dodgers decided to take some interesting players. The most intriguing one is former top draft pick, Carson Fulmer. Former major league pitcher, Jon Duplantier, and Brewer catcher, Kekai Rios were also selected by the Dodgers. The Dodgers lost two players in the same draft; left-handed pitcher Nelfri Contreras and shortstop Carlos Santiago.

Eddys Leonard Interview

At Dodgers 2080 we had the opportunity to interview newly minted 40-man roster addition, Eddys Leonard. He’s a player to watch with great defensive versatility and a bat that could propel him to the major league roster within the next two seasons.

Diego Cartaya!!!!

One reason the Dodgers were able to trade catcher Keibert Ruiz was the emergence of Diego Cartaya. Some would the 20-year old catcher as the top Dodgers’ prospect and he is coming quickly. Our Daniel Palma wrote about a deeper dive by baseball America of why Cartaya is showing up on everyone’s radar as a high-end prospect.

Top 30 Prospect Robinson Ortiz

Robinson Ortiz has been in and out of the top 30 prospects for the Dodgers. Casey Porter wrote a breakdown of Ortiz that gives us some detail of how Ortiz has evolved. One of the bigger items that changes for Ortiz is an uptick on his fastball. It is too bad he missed most of the 2021 season so the hope is that 2022 can be a time for Ortiz to shine.

Jose Ramos Breaks Out

Another player we looked at with Dodgers 2080 was breakout prospect, Jose Ramos. The power-hitting and very strong armed outfielder made a great impression in his time at Rancho Cucamonga.

Getting Excited For Bobby Miller

Top pitching prospect, Bobby Miller, is turning heads and getting people fired up. There are some that believe he could make his Major League debut in 2022. I think that might be a bit aggressive but if he earns it, I can’t wait to see him pitch at Dodger Stadium.

The Major League Rule 5 Draft

Once the lockout has ended (please be soon!) the Major League Rule 5 Draft will be conducted and there are quite a few players that the Dodgers might lose. Our Clint Pasillas wrote about some candidates that are getting some heat about being taken, specifically Jeren Kendall and Ryan Noda. Kendall was the first round pick of the Dodgers in 2017 but he has struggled with the strikeouts. His upside is huge if he can connect with the ball on a semi-consistent basis. Noda has immense power and was one of the players the Dodgers acquired in the Ross Stripling trade.
