Dodgers Roster News: LA Activates Michael Grove Off Injured List, Option LHP to AAA

The Los Angeles Dodgers have officially activated RHP Michael Grove off the injured list to start Saturday’s game against the Yankees. To make room on the active roster, LHP Justin Bruihl was optioned to Triple-A.

Grove last pitched on April 20 against the Chicago Cubs, in a start that he left after just three innings with a groin injury. Grove made three starts before that, and struggled in his first two before pitching well in his third.

Grove was reportedly dealing with an illness for his first two starts, so when he was healthy, he pitched 8.2 innings and allowed just three earned runs while striking out six.

Now, Grove is re-entering a rotation that has gotten noticeably more thin since he was last in it.

Julio Urias is still a little ways away from making his return to the mound, while Dustin May won’t be back until after the All-Star break, at the earliest. If Grove pitches well, he can earn himself some more consistent playing time, potentially sliding into an every fifth day role until May’s return.

As for Bruihl, he’s struggled as of late after getting off to a strong start. In his last 7.2 innings pitched, he’s allowed seven earned runs.

He should be back at some point this season, but for now, the Dodgers want to continue to give Alex Vesia an opportunity as a left-handed reliever.

More Roster News

In addition to the Grove news, the Dodgers also have RHP Tayler Scott on the taxi squad this weekend for the series against the Yankees. Roberts said the Dodgers had some “smoke” in the bullpen and wanted some extra coverage just in case.

“There’s a little smoke with a couple guys, but I think as of now, it’s all kind of subsided and we’re gonna stay status quo.”

The Dodgers didn’t elect to make a roster move involving Scott on Friday or Saturday, so it sounds like things should be okay. The only way Scott would be able to be activated is if someone was placed on the injured list, so hopefully he won’t be joining the active roster anytime soon.
