Dodgers Score: Game Updates vs Cardinals on Saturday, Odds, Thompson Starts vs LHP

The Dodgers are looking to make it two in a row and have the right guy on the mound to do it. The ace, Clayton Kershaw, gets the ball for his sixth start of the year and goes for win number 5 on the season. He’s making his 20th career regular season start against the St. Louis Cardinals and has fair well against them over the years, at least in the regular season. More on that in a minute.

First pitch is set for 6:10 PM in Los Angeles. Before the game, the organization will honor pinch hitting specialist and long time coach and advisor, Manny Mota, inducting him into the “Legends of Dodger Baseball.”

Facing St. Louis left-hander Jordan Montgomery, the LA lineup will look a bit differently than it did last night. Here’s the starting 9 Dave Roberts is running out there.

The lineup goes right hand heavy with Trayce Thompson and Chris Taylor making their first starts of the series. Freddie Freeman, Max Muncy, and James Outman are the only left-hand swinging batters in the lineup tonight.

It’s worth noting that the 14-13 Dodgers have struggled mightily against lefty pitching, hitting just .165 vs southpaws in 2023, dead last in baseball. The club’s .629 OPS is slightly above the Seattle Mariners for the worst production in MLB.

Stand Out Stat

Trayce Thompson is 4 for 37 with 7 walks and 21 strikeouts since his 3 home run game at the start of the season. That’s a .108 batting average and that’s a glaring problem.

Pitching Matchup

Kershaw will be making his 20th career regular season start against the red birds. In 19 previous starts, he’s gone 9-5 with a 2.97 ERA. Of course, the trolls will bring up his struggles vs St. Louis in the postseason — 6 GS, 20 ER, 29.1 IP, 6.14 ERA — but his last start in October against the Cardinals was 10 years ago… so there’s that.

The future Hall of Famer is going for the 202nd win his career.

Mongomery is facing the Dodgers for the second time in his career. In his previous start, he was hit around for 6 runs in 4 innings.
