Freddie Freeman ‘Day to Day’ for Dodgers With Latest Injury

Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman was a surprise omission from the lineup in Monday’s series opener against the Atlanta Braves.

Manager Dave Roberts revealed that Freeman suffered a “mishap” while entering the shower, tweaking and re-injuring his surgically-repaired ankle.

“He had a little mishap in the shower, entering the shower, the bathtub,” Roberts said ahead of Monday’s game. “It swelled up a little bit. Not able to play tonight.”

However, Roberts said Freeman wanted to play on Monday, and would be re-evaluated ahead of Tuesday’s game. He labeled him as day to day.

“He feels that he could go out there and play,” Roberts said. “But just the upside-downside, doing the math, just let him recoup today, and we’ll see how he is tomorrow.”

Freeman doesn’t like missing games, but has already been forced to sit out three this season due to prior injuries that resurfaced.

In Japan, Freeman was scratched from the season opening lineup due to rib discomfort in the same place he had broken rib cartilage during last year’s postseason. He sat out the second game of the series, too, before returning to the field for the Freeway Series against the Angels.

Now, another prior injury has resurfaced, as Freeman played through an ankle sprain that required offseason surgery. Freeman knew he wouldn’t be 100 percent this season, but was ready to play through the pain.

However, after tweaking it in the shower and the ankle swelling up, the Dodgers decided to exercise caution with the All-Star first baseman.

The Dodgers lineup has been just fine without Freeman and without Mookie Betts for three games. L.A. is a perfect 6-0 to start the year, and has averaged six runs per contest.
