Dodgers Re-Acquire Amed Rosario From Tampa Bay Rays, Designate Ryan Yarbrough for Assignment

The Dodgers re-acquired Amed Rosario from the Tampa Bay Rays Monday. It’s the second consecutive year the Dodgers have acquired Rosario, a defense-first shortstop/second baseman, ahead of the MLB trade deadline.

Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic was first to report the news.

Rosario, 28, was acquired by the Dodgers on July 26, 2023 from the Cleveland Guardians for Noah Syndergaard and cash. He immediately switched from shortstop to second base, and slashed .256/.301/.408 while providing steady defense at a position of need in 48 games with the Dodgers.

In 76 games with the Rays this year, Rosario had a .307 batting average, a .331 on-base percentage and .417 slugging percentage. Each of those would represent his highest numbers over a full season since 2019, when Rosario was in his third season with the New York Mets.

The Dodgers will reportedly send pitcher Michael Flynn to Tampa in return. Flynn, a 27-year-old right-hander, had 50 strikeouts in 46.1 innings to go with a 4.95 ERA across 28 relief appearances at Triple-A Oklahoma City.

The Dodgers needed to make a corresponding move on the 40-man and 26-man rosters because Flynn is on neither. Since the Dodgers don’t play until Tuesday in San Diego, the 26-man move might not be finalized until then.

The 40-man roster move is a surprise: left-handed pitcher Ryan Yarbrough was designated for assignment.

Yarbrough, a 32-year-old left-hander, is one of the slowest-throwing pitchers in baseball. For the most part, his breaking-ball heavy finesse repertoire works. In In 32 games (67.1 innings), he’d allowed 52 hits, walked 25 batters and struck out 39 while pitching to a 3.74 ERA.

The deadline for teams to trade major league players who have not cleared waivers is 3 p.m. PT Tuesday. The trade for Rosario wasn’t even the biggest move the Dodgers made on Monday; that would be the three-team deal that sent White Sox pitcher Michael Kopech and St. Louis Cardinals infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman to Los Angeles.

Kopech figures to slot into Yarbrough’s place in the bullpen. While Edman is currently on the minor league rehab trail following off-season surgery, Rosario can immediately slot in at shortstop as an offensive upgrade over Nick Ahmed.

In addition to Edman, the Dodgers are awaiting the returns of injured infielders Mookie Betts (hand) and Miguel Rojas (forearm tightness).

  1. Also not an “impact starting pitcher”. There may be hope, though: Flaherty was scratched today.

  2. I thought Yarbrough was pretty effective out of the pen. I could think of a couple of others that might be better candidates for the door than him. I know they need to make room for Kopech but… there must be a reason. I know, I know, trust in Friedman.

  3. As the team sits, Ryan has been their best pitcher as of late. Kershaw will only be good for 3-4 innings and just as many runs. Glasnow will be going into uncharted waters so who knows. Knack has been ok, but Buehler Yamamoto, are not going to be at the top of their game. So far the Phillies are still a better team so as of right now the Dodgers are not a WS team…. We’ll see, that’s why they play but like you’ve said no impact players added so far, just shuffeling the deck.

  4. DODGERS ACQUIRING TOMMY EDMAN, AND NOT 28 YEAR OLD, LANE THOMAS, SHOWS THEY AREN’T THE SHARPEST TOOL IN THE SHED. WE KNOW. FOR A FACT, THAT THE YANKEES, BRAVES, MARINERS, & CLEVELAND WANTED THOMAS, ALL PLAYOFF TEAMS. TELL US WHO WANTED LITTLE TOMMY EDMAN BESIDES THE DODGERS? HE’S A NICE PLAYER, BUT HE’S NOT AN IMPACT GUY LIKE THOMAS. BASICALLY, HE’S A UTILITYMAN, AS WAS LA’S SCOUTMASTER MANAGER, DAVE ROBERTS.
LA HAD A CHANCE TO LOCK UP THEIR WEAK CENTERFIELD POSTION WITH A SOLID MAJOR LEAGUER WHO IS JUST STARTING TO BLOSSOM, AFTER A SOLID, FULL & PRODUCTIVE SEASON, LAST YEAR IN WASHINGTON. TOMMY EDMAN IS A GOOD BALLPLAYER, BUT THE DODGERS FRONT OFFICE IS A NOT A SMART, FRONT OFFICE, BASEBALL-WISE. WHAT THEY GOT IN EDMAN WAS SOMEONE WHO CAN FILL IN AT VARIOUS POSITIONS, BUT IS HE GOING TO REPLACE LUX AT 2ND? IS HE GOING TO REPLACE BETTS OR ROJAS AT SS? WHERE’S HE GOING TO PLAY? THEY’VE ALSO BROUGHT IN ROSARIO AGAIN. WHERE’S HE GOING TO PLAY??
BRINGING IN THESE ‘FILL IN’ TYPES OF PLAYERS ONLY CREATES MORE COMPETITION IN THE CLUBHOUSE! NOW GUYS ARE LOOKING OVER THEIR SHOULDERS. AND SINCE EVERONE NEEDS TO GET TO KNOW THE NEW GUYS, IT MAY WELL BLOW CLUBHOUSE CHEMISTRY. THEY COU;DVE HAD THE KEY POSITION PLAYER THEY NEEDED WHO IS A SOLID, EXPERIENCED OUTFIELDER, CAN PLAY DEFENSE, HAS A GREAT ARM, CAN RUN, AND CAN GIVE YOU PRODUCTION, MORE THAN A TOMMY EDMAN CAN. HE WOULD’VE BEEN AN EXCELLENT 5-6 MAN IN THE B.O.
PAGES HEYWARD, EDMAN, ROSARIO, AHMED, ARE NOT IMPACT PLAYERS THAT YOU PENCIL IN THE LINEUP EVERY DAY THAT WILL GIVE YOU PRODUCTION FROM 5 TO 9! WHO THE HELL IS MAKING THESE ROSTER DECISIONS FOR THE DODGERS? THESE MOVES TODAY WILL ONLY COMPLICATE THINGS, PRODUCING A CLUTTER AMONG POSITION PLAYERS THAT SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING GOING INTO THE STRETCH RUN. IT’S NOT WHAT LA NEEDS.
SIMPLY STATED, THEY NEED/ED STARTING PITCHING, AND AN OUTFIELDER WHO CAN PLAY ALL THREE POSITIONS, AND CAN CARRY A PRODUCTIVE HITTING LOAD, AS WELL. THOMAS WOULD’VE SOLIDIFIED THAT NEED! THESE OTHER FRINGE-TYPE PLAYERS WILL NOT HAVE AN IMPACT ON THE DODGERS WINNING A WORLD SERIES…IF THEY EVEN GET THAT FAR!
WHAT THEY DID TODAY WAS “TIP TOE THROUGH THE TULIPS,” LOOKING FOR BARGAIN-BASEMENT PLAYERS, AS WELL AS RECLAMATION PROJECTS. THEYRE LUCKY OHTANI WANTED TO BE A DODGER BECAUSE THEY WOULD BE IN ‘DEEP DOO DOO’ TODAY, IF NOT SO. WE PREDICT, IF THIS DODGER BASEBALL OPERATION DOESN’T GET AN IMPACT STARTER BY TOMORROW, START MAKING PLANS FOR NEXT SEASON.
P.S. WE KNOW LANE THOMAS & HE’S EXCITED TO BE IN CLEVELAND, A TOUGH, GRITTY BALL CLUB, WHERE HE’LL COMPETE FOR A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. TOO BAD THE DODGERS DIDN’T VALUE WHAT HE BRINGS, BUT THOSE TEAMS THAT WANTED LANE ARE EITHER LEADING THEIR DIVISION OR IN STRIKING DISTANCE OF 1ST PLACE? THAT SAYS A LOT ABOUT LANE THOMAS’ WORTH!.
