What Are the Dodgers Getting in the Caleb Ferguson Trade?

The Dodgers front office was busy Monday morning, trading away left-handed reliever Caleb Ferguson to the New York Yankees. In exchange for the veteran left-hander, the Dodgers acquired two pitchers from New York. Lefty Matt Gage and right-hander Christian Zazueta will be coming over to Los Angeles.

Additionally, in a corresponding move, the team also re-signed right-hander Ryan Brasier to a two-year, $9 million deal.

Matt Gage:

Gage comes over after having some experience in the big leagues. He has 16 appearances in the majors, splitting time between the Toronto Blue Jays and Houston Astros.

In 2022, he made 11 appearances with Toronto, posting an ERA of 1.38 over 13 innings of work. Opposing batters hit just .146 against him, and he should provide L.A. with a nice left-handed depth option out of the bullpen.

Last season with Houston, he made five appearances, posting an ERA of 2.70 in 6.2 innings. Gage could shift back and forth between the big leagues and Triple-A, providing an arm for the Dodgers as needed.

The Yankees claimed him off waivers a week ago, and now he ends up in Los Angeles. Since Gage was on the Yankees 40-man roster, the Dodgers will still need to make room on their 40-man roster to make the signing of Brasier official.

Christian Zazueta:

Zazueta is a 19-year-old right-hander who was a part of the Yankees’ Dominican Summer League team. Last season, he put up an ERA of 3.29 in 12 starts over 52 innings pitched.

There is real upside for Zazueta, as he struck out 50 batters during the season. Opposing hitters went .211 against him, and he posted a WHIP of 1.10. This is another long-term project for the Dodgers.

  1. What am I missing? Gage sounds better than Fergie plus we get a lower level prospect?
As for Brassier, all they have to do is wait a week to sign him. that’s when we wil have 3 guys moving from the 40 man to the 60 day IL.
