Dodgers Highlights: Emmet Sheehan Throws 6 No-Hit Innings in Debut, Bullpen Blows It

Friday night’s game… was not for the faint of heart. The Dodgers completely crumbled late and lost a frustrating one in extra innings on a final of 7-5.

The story of the first six innings was 23-year-old rookie Emmet Sheehan. Sheehan was making his MLB debut against a red-hot San Francisco Giants team, and he completely shut them down.

Sheehan ended up throwing six no-hit, shutout innings, allowing just two walks while striking out three. He left with a 4-0 lead, one that the Dodgers had no business blowing, especially with how lethargic the Giants’ lineup looked against Sheehan.

Unfortunately, the bullpen had other plans.

Brusdar Graterol gave up a two-run home run in the seventh inning, quickly making it 4-2. Then, in the eighth inning, Victor Gonzalez got into immediate trouble, and the Giants ended up tying the game with Tayler Scott on the mound. Then, on an infield single to shortstop, they took a 5-4 lead.

Sheehan allowed zero runs on zero hits in six innings in his MLB debut. The Dodgers bullpen allowed a quick five runs in five hits in the next two innings.

On the offensive side of things, the Dodgers got four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, with yet another impressive two-out rally. Hits by Will Smith, J.D. Martinez and James Outman gave Sheehan the run support we all thought would be enough to get the win in his MLB debut.

But the bats came back to life in the ninth to let the bullpen off the hook (only a little) to tie the game. With one out, Miguel Rojas singled and stole second base. Mookie Betts singled to right for his second hit of the game and Rojas moved to third. Freddie Freeman came up and punched a jam-shot single to center to tie it. Somewhat shockingly, Betts was caught trying to steal third for the second out. Will Smith walked and J.D. Martinez struck out to end the inning.

For the second straight game, the Dodgers went to extra innings.

Tied at 5-5, Caleb Ferguson came on to pitch a clean top of the 10th, but the Dodgers couldn’t put the winning run across in the bottom of the inning. The Giants scored two in the top of the 11th to ultimately end the pain and hand the Dodgers loss number 31 on the season.

Aside from the game itself, the Dodgers lost two playersDavid Peralta and Chris Taylor — to injuries during the game. We should know more on both after the game and on Saturday, but for now, we know Peralta left with a left hamstring strain and Taylor left with right knee pain.

  1. Dodgers are FREDDY FREEMAN SOFT! WAY WAY TOO SOFT to win WS championships! 1 in 35 years=NOT great! They win just enough to satisfy their fan base…60-70% Hispanic. Its not fair to them who pay hard-earned bucks to come to Dodger Stadium & watch an OK Dodger team win enough, but NOT enough!
They have a weak ‘baseball savvy, Mgr. (Roberts) who can’t manage & win tight games (2017 WS); doesn’t have experienced, baseball strategy chops to know HOW to manage a game, & has NO CLUE how to handle a pitching staff. He’s way too friendly & too BUDDY-BUDDY with the players!
Has he ever been thrown out of a game for arguing FOR his players! You can count his ‘thrown outs’ on ONE hand!!
AND, there is NO tough energy Kirk Gibson’s on this team; it’s full of SOFT SOFT & more SOFT players, some reclamation projects & others like “Caddy for Kershaw” Barnes who just don’t belong in the SHOW!
Tonight’s game was an example of how to lose a game, which LA ‘s being doing a good job of lately. Roberts simply doesn’t know how to use the game’s fundamentals, like Kapler, Francona, Baker, Bochy, Showalter etc. LA’s front office led by Stan Jaffe should NEVER be forgiven for letting (by not paying him) Corey Seager leave! They keep getting reclamation projects on the cheap, but let true stars like Seager leave! They are simply a HYPE Hollywood franchise, who has poor to mediocre leadership both in the front office & in the clubhouse!
ONE WS WIN in 35 years (in the bubble) says it all!

  2. Muncy Graterol Thompson Heyward Taylor, just a few Dodger ‘on the cheap’ players who DO NOT bring the talent & energy to a floundering team led by a “no clue” Manager who does not have experience managing teams with lessor players now than what he was given over the past 6 years. He can’t just throw the ball out on the field like years before, and say “Go play!” Now he has to manage, and frankly he looks bewildered. If it wasn’t for for Bob Geren, he’d be home watching games on TV!
This is an alert to the Dodger Hispanic fanbase who spend hard-earned dollars on this ‘win just enough to keep them happy,’ marshmallow SOFT ASS team! Remember ONE WS title in in the bubble, in 35 years is NOT considered great results for all the Hype pub the Dodgers get! LA Ownership NEEDS to clean house & start with replacing Stan Jaffe, & his jockey Andrew Friedman. Has either of these MOPES ever played the game of pro baseball? How did they get their jobs? Based on what experience in the game?
Next to go is Roberts, the luckiest MGR in OB!! WOW – this team is a mirage – a HYPE! It’s FULL of “Bargain Basement” players, and will be very lucky to make the playoffs! There are too many MLB teams with good, tough, hard-nosed, energy players (are you listening Dodger Mgmt & clubhouse), & who have experienced, know how to manage, MGR’s!

  3. The Dodgers should DUMP their bullpen and use starters in double shifts. The Bullpen is demonstrably and emotionally terrible for the team and the FANS
