Dodgers Lose Catcher in Minor League Rule 5 Draft

Always an afterthought of the Winter Meetings — at least for casual fans — the MLB Rule 5 Draft was conducted Wednesday in Nashville. While the Dodgers did not make any selections in the Rule 5 Draft, a rival from the National League East snapped one up during the minor league phase of the draft.

The Philadelphia Phillies selected catcher Carson Taylor, a 24-year-old who has spent each of the last two seasons at Double-A Tulsa.

After the conclusion of the World Series, the Dodgers protected three players from the major league portion of the Rule 5 Draft. Catcher Hunter Feduccia, and pitchers Landon Knack and Nick Frasso, were all added to the 40-man roster.

Even with four catchers on their 40-man roster, the Dodgers still have young Dalton Rushing waiting in the wings. Losing another minor league catcher to the Phillies should have little impact on the Dodgers’ depth chart at the position.

Any player who meets the same eligibility requirements of the MLB Rule 5 Draft who is not added to the organization’s 38-man Triple-A roster can be selected by another team in the minor league phase of the draft.

Players like Taylor who are taken in the minor-league phase of the draft do not need to be added to the drafting team’s 40-man or active roster, and can be assigned to any minor league affiliate by their new club.
