Dodgers: Max Muncy Unsure if Injured Elbow is Part of His Slump

It’s hard to believe that Max Muncy is playing baseball on a daily basis. When he revealed that he had suffered a torn UCL in his elbow at the end of last season, Dodgers fans immediately assumed they wouldn’t see much of him this year. Muncy tore it on a collision at first base in the final games of the regular season in 2021.

But a few months into the 2022 season and Max is in there playing very often. And while that’s a great thing, the results have not been there for the Dodgers infielder yet. Muncy is hitting just .144 through his first 29 games of the season.

But despite that, Dave Roberts is forever the optimist. The Dodgers skipper spoke about things he has liked in Max’s approach and added that there is reason to believe that good things are coming. And with the way seasons have started for Max in the past, he might be right.

“There’s been some good at-bats, solid contact, he’s still taking walks, I still like the quality of the at-bat. It’s easy to bet there’s going to be positive results coming.”

But the natural concern is always going to be that elbow. It’s an easy thing for Dodgers fans to look at with Muncy’s power numbers down. He has homered 3 times and his hard-hit percentages are way down from the last few seasons.

But if there is some good news, it’s that Muncy’s eye is as good as ever. He’s still walking in nearly 23 percent of his plate appearances, putting him in the top 1 percent of the league. Baserunners are incredibly valuable in this league, and the Dodgers know that having him in there is important.

The hits will start to come for Muncy. When asked if the elbow has played a role this week, all he said was that he wasn’t sure. But he has said in the past that he doesn’t believe he will be back to 100 percent until next year. So for now, all he can do is keep putting in the work.
