Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Expects Clayton Kershaw Back ‘Some Point Next Week’

Clayton Kershaw hasn’t made an appearance in the majors since June 27, when the 35-year-old left a game against the Rockies after a dominant performance.

Kershaw, who was named an All-Star for his impressive start to the 2023 season, has held a 2.55 ERA across 16 starts and was the first starting pitcher to reach 10 wins this season. He left the game in Denver due to shoulder soreness and has since expressed his confusion about the lingering pain in his shoulder.

As the postseason inches closer with the trade deadline in the rearview mirror, Dodger fans received good news regarding Kershaw’s return.

“At some point next week, I see him pitching for the Dodgers,” said manager Dave Roberts.

Roberts also said that Kershaw threw a 4-inning simulated game Thursday and will likely have another bullpen session before making his return.

As the Dodgers seek to maintain their two-game lead in the NL West, Kershaw’s return will be a welcome sight. Starters Julio Urias and Tony Gonsolin have had subpar seasons, with both of their ERAs above 4. Rookies have been a surprisingly important part of the starting rotation, with Michael Grove (6.75 ERA), Bobby Miller (4.37 ERA) and Emmet Sheehan (5.77 ERA) all pitching significant innings for the Dodgers.

With Kershaw, the Dodgers have one of the best pitchers of all time, who, even in his absence of over a month, has pitched the most innings for LA this season.

The Dodgers play in San Diego and Arizona next week. We’ll see if Kershaw can return when the team heads to Arizona.
