Dodgers Roster News: RHP Emmet Sheehan Optioned, LHP Ryan Yarbrough Activated

The rotation of arms is starting up the Dodgers’ starting pitchers.

After acquiring left-handed pitcher Ryan Yarbrough from the Kansas City Royals there was an abundance of starting arms for the team out of Chavez Ravine.

While Yarbrough has been used as a starter and reliever before in his career, the Dodgers may have narrowed down his role by optioning rookie pitcher Emmet Sheehan.

Yarbrough will most likely look to fill in the rotation spot left by Sheehan and Michael Grove. The current rotation looks like this:

  1. Julio Urias
  2. Tony Gonsolin
  3. Lance Lynn
  4. Bobby Miller
  5. Ryan Yarbrough

Barring the return of pitchers like Clayton Kershaw, Walker Buehler, and Ryan Pepiot, the Dodgers have four good veteran pitchers with a lot of innings and a budding rookie star-in-the-making.

Emmet Sheehan looked promising ever since he had been called up from Double-A on June 16th. In his first start, he finished six innings on no-hit baseball against the San Francisco Giants and ended his first month of MLB pitching with a 2-0 record and a 2.65 ERA. His second month however displayed a lack of control as he walked 13 batters in only 17.1 innings pitched and ended July with a 5.77 ERA on the year.

His lack of experience sparked the need for starting pitchers as Kershaw also went down with an injury. The team acquired starting pitchers Lance Lynn, from the White Sox, and Ryan Yarbrough, from the Royals, before the MLB trade deadline thus putting into question where the 23-year-old rookie stands in the rotation.

A possible option popped up during the third game of the series against the Oakland Athletics where Emmet Sheehan was seen warming up in the bullpen.

Sheehan did come out of the bullpen and in a 2-0 ballgame ended up throwing the last four innings recording his first career save. The rookie looked promising as he was able to strike out three batters and only allow two solo shots in an 8-2 victory to sweep the A’s.

While some thought he may see more bullpen time those rumors have been quickly dismissed as the team has optioned him and activated their trade deadline piece in Ryan Yarbrough.

Look for Yarbrough to fill out the back end of the starting rotation as the team takes on the San Diego Padres in a four-game series at Petco Park.
