Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Knows Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts Deserve MVP Award

The MVP award in sports is one of the most special out there. It is an honor bestowed on the most talented players across a league and isn’t something to be taken lightly.

In baseball, two players each season are granted the award due to their incredible years. The award is a culmination of a season that industry members deemed the best.

This season in the National League, we seem to be having one of the closest races that anyone can remember. There are four main frontrunners, two members of the Los Angeles Dodgers and two from the Atlanta Braves.

Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Matt Olson and Ronald Acuna Jr. headline the MVP chase, and each one of them could have a case made for them.

But Dodgers manager Dave Roberts believes that his guys are truly deserving.

“I think all four of those guys are MVP viable candidates,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of the race among Acuna, Freeman, Olson and Betts. “There’s no wrong answer. I’m obviously biased towards our guys because I see them every day and I see the impact they have on our ballclub.

This seems like a pretty typical answer from Roberts, but it’s nice to see that he is showing support to his guys.

All four players are in the midst of incredible years, and both teams are two of the best in baseball. LA has gained some ground on the league-leading Braves of late, and they are only a few games behind them.

Roberts added more about his two All-Star players.

“It’s the question we all have every year. What constitutes an MVP? That’s the thing. I could say my definition of valuable is what is their value to our ballclub. Or is it to the best player who has the best statistics? That’s why it’s so debated every year. I don’t know how Olson or Acuna affect the clubhouse. I only know their stat line. I know with our guys.”

The Dodger All-Stars have been vital to the overall success of this team. It has been a massive reason why LA has jumped up in the standings.

The Dodgers were supposed to take a step back this season, but the production of Freeman and Betts has carried them. Their teammates haven’t let it go unnoticed either, as outfielder Jason Heyward gave his thoughts on his two special teammates.

“Freddie and Mookie, having them on this team – if you don’t have them, you don’t know where we’d be. Especially this year when our pitching staff has been banged up.”

Per The OC Register

On the year, Freeman is hitting .339 with 23 home runs and 83 runs batted in. Betts is hitting .287 with 31 home runs and 80 runs batted in. Both players are deserving of the MVP award, with Freeman likely in the lead of the race, ever so slightly.

LA is going to need both guys to continue producing at a high level if they want to reach their ultimate goal of winning another World Series. Luckily for the Dodgers, both players are some of the best in the game and always show up for their team.
