Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Reacts to Daniel Hudson’s Heartbreaking Injury

Just when the Dodgers thought they had moved past the injuries to veteran relief pitcher Daniel Hudson, cruel fate showed up and had other ideas. Hudson sprained his MCL in Wednesday’s win over the Pittsburgh Pirates and he will now miss a significant amount of time according to manager Dave Roberts.

Hudson had just been activated less than a week ago after missing the second half of last season and all of this year due to a torn ACL. He suffered the injury on the 28th of his 29 pitches in the game on the way to his first save in over a year.  Roberts spoke on the frustration that everyone in the organization is feeling for Hudson.

“I just can’t put into words how frustrating, how disappointing this is for him,” Roberts said of Hudson. “It’s going to be quite some time (before Hudson returns). He gutted it out. I don’t know how he made those last two pitches.”

Per The OC Register

Before the injury, Hudson appeared in just three games, allowing just two hits and striking out five batters in the process. He was once again looking like his dominant self and this is a massive blow to a Dodgers bullpen that has really struggled to find any sort of consistency this season.

Hudson had become one of the more reliable options for the Dodgers last season prior to his ACL injury. The 36-year-old worked his way back through hard work and dedication to pitch again, making this a tough situation.

“I know the grind, and what he’s gone through. You feel like an outcast when you’re not around. You feel ‘why am I doing this, is it worth it?’ You finally get to a point where you’ve gotten back and the highest of highs of getting a save. Then to fall back, when the adrenaline settles in and you realize that you’re back on the IL and going to be missing a significant amount of time, my heart breaks for him.”

Per The OC Register

He likely will be back at some point but having suffered another injury, there is no guarantee. And due to his age, the team can’t rely on him coming back strong or staying healthy either.

“He was committed to coming back this year,” Roberts said of Hudson. “He could’ve walked away last year, committed to coming back. For it to end right now the way it did, it hurts.”

Per The OC Register

Without Hudson in the mix for the foreseeable future, the Dodgers will once again be searching for answers as they try to make it through this season. With the trade deadline quickly coming up, the front office will need to make some moves to upgrade this bullpen. They have been forced to tinker through different arms all year long and it’s not a sustainable plan for winning baseball games later in the year.

Here’s to hoping that we see Hudson out there on the mound again soon and this time, he can stay there!
