Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Surprised With Padres Seth Lugo’s Comments, ‘Sounds Like an Excuse’

Over the weekend, the Dodgers took care of the San Diego Padres, winning three out of four games and doing so in dominant fashion.

The Dodgers scored 32 runs across the four games, and capped it off with a 13-7 win on Monday in which LA scored 13 unanswered runs.

Eight of those runs came in the 4th inning against Padres starter Seth Lugo, and the big inning was capped off by a Mookie Betts grand slam on a 3-0 pitch.

After the game, Lugo was unhappy with the results, and made an unfounded accusation saying the Dodgers knew what pitches were coming.

Mookie Betts was among the Dodgers to react to that claim, which you can read about here. But Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was also asked about that accusation, and had a very simple response to Lugo’s claim.

“It’s surprising coming from him,” Roberts said. “Sounds like an excuse.”

He continued to say he doesn’t agree with Lugo’s take.

“I don’t think that was the case, and if it were, that’s gamesmanship,” Roberts said. “Given the respect I have from him from the other side, excuse-making a little surprising.”

This isn’t the first time the Dodgers have been accused of doing something like this — something, I would like to add, that is totally legal. However, Roberts just takes these accusations as a compliment.

“I think that’s a sign of smart players,” Roberts said. “That’s the beginning of baseball, to be able to do that. And when you have players that can relay signs and if you don’t give the right signs or you’re showing your grips and things like that, that’s high baseball IQ players that we have. And I think that’s the biggest compliment. We get that quite a lot of times, it’s unfounded, but I think that the reputation itself, I guess clearly does enough to impact the pitcher.”

The Dodgers have obviously brushed off Lugo’s comments, but it is pretty sad to see him come at LA instead of taking responsibility for a bad inning.

But either way, everyone has moved on from this, and the Dodgers will look to continue their winning ways as the Padres hope to turn their disappointing season around.
