Dodgers News: Diego Cartaya Dealing With Back Injury, Should Be Ready For Start of Season

Los Angeles Dodgers’ former number two prospect in 2023, per MLB.com, catcher Diego Cartaya, has not been healthy this spring. According to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, Cartaya has not played this spring training due to a back issue.

The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya reported on Saturday morning.

Although the 22-year-old has yet to get some action this spring, Roberts said he should be ready to start the MiLB season in 2024.

It’s been a rough go for the former number-two prospect for the Dodgers last season. With the Double-A Tulsa team, Cartaya slashed an abysmal .189/.278/.379 with a .657 OPS, 19 home runs, 57 RBIs, 67 hits, and 51 runs in 354 ABs and 93 games.

This isn’t the first time Cartya has dealt with back issues or injury problems. Last season, his season was cut short by an injury in late August.

The once-promising catcher has been hindered by lousy play and injuries. Cartaya was supposed to be the catcher to back up or eventually replace Will Smith, but those days seem long gone as things stand.

His MLB future with the Dodgers is uncertain at the moment. We’ll see if he can come back healthy and prove to be the once-decorated prospect we came to know and love.
