Dodgers News: Shohei Ohtani to Take Huge Step in Recovery on Monday

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts shared that designated hitter Shohei Ohtani is taking a huge step in his recovery process Monday by hitting on the field. This will be the first time that Ohtani is hitting on the field since undergoing surgery to repair a torn UCL in his right elbow.

Though the Dodgers’ huge $700 million free agency signing will not be pitching for the 2024 season, this progress is still a significant step for Ohtani, who plans to be ready to play for the Dodgers’ opening game of the season on March 20 in Seoul, Korea.

Ohtani has been one of the best batters in MLB since entering the league. In 2023, Ohtani hit .304 with 44 home runs and 95 RBI. He also finished first with an OPS of 1.066.

Ohtani ended the season as the American League home run leader and won the AL Hank Aaron Award, an award given out to the best hitter in the AL based on both media and fan voting. Ohtani also won his third consecutive Edgar Martínez Award in 2023, given to the top designated hitter in MLB.

Ohtani is currently set to be the third hitter in the Dodgers’ lineup this upcoming season and is expected to boost the Dodgers’ already strong hitting lineup. In 2023, the Dodgers finished seventh while batting as a team at an average of .257.

Los Angeles did even better in home runs and RBI, finishing second in both categories while recording 249 home runs and 877 RBI.
