Dodgers Rumors: Insider Expects Max Muncy’s 2024 Option to Be Picked Up

Since 2018, Max Muncy has been a reliable power hitter for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is a no-nonsense player who often plays a key role in helping the team win. After a resurgent 2023 regular season offensive performance, the Dodgers have a decision to make on Muncy.

The front office should pick up Muncy’s $14 million option since it is a bargain. His 36 home runs were the second-most on the Dodgers, behind Mookie Betts’ 39 home runs. He had a low batting average but did continue to have a great eye for the strike zone. The Dodgers value walks to create scoring opportunities, and Muncy is one of the best at doing that.

When the Dodgers signed Freddie Freeman last year, Muncy lost his first base position where he excelled. However, he can still play either second or third base, albeit not as well as he played at first.

Despite working hard to improve his defense, Muncy is barely an average defensive third baseman. He struggles with the backhand play and often rushes plays that lead to many errors. He doesn’t have a strong accurate throwing arm, leading many Dodger fans to want their favorite team to acquire a better defensive third baseman.

However, at $14 million, Muncy will be a bargain, and Andrew Friedman likes bargains.

MLB insider Thomas Harrigan expects Muncy to be back in LA next season:

“Look for the Dodgers to pick up Muncy’s option after the infielder slugged 36 homers with 105 RBIs and an .808 OPS over 135 games in 2023. The 33-year-old doesn’t hit for average, but he walks a ton and has reached the 35-homer mark in four of the past five full seasons.”
