Dodgers Rumors: MLB Insider Lays Out Timeline For Dylan Cease Trade

Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Dylan Cease has long been a trade target for the Dodgers, and it seems more likely than ever that he will get moved this winter. Chicago is in the midst of a potential firesale, and they know that Cease can get them multiple good prospects to help with their rebuild.

LA remains one of the more aggressive teams in on a potential Cease trade, and they believe he has the stuff to help bolster their rotation. He would be a home run addition to the rotation and would be a difference-maker for the team.

It was reported recently that trade talks for Cease had intensified, but one MLB insider had laid out when we can expect a trade to happen. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic is saying that the White Sox may wait until after the big free agents sign to gain more leverage on the trade market.

“New White Sox general manager Chris Getz is telling clubs he likely will wait to move on right-hander Dylan Cease until after the top free-agent starting pitchers sign, according to major-league sources briefed on the discussions.”

Per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic

Cease was the runner-up in the American League Cy Young Award race in 2022, posting an ERA of 2.20 over 32 starts. He did, however, have a down year in 2023, posting an ERA of 4.58 over 33 starts and a WHIP of 1.42. He also struck out 214 batters over 177 innings of work.

This includes a game back in June against the Dodgers, where he struck out 10 over 5.1 innings of work. LA got to see up close and personal just how dominant he could be when he is on.

The Dodgers may prefer Cease to some of the other available pitchers because he still has two years left of team control on his contract. It would give them more flexibility, and a cheaper ace-level pitcher on their starting staff.

With their starting rotation in flux right now, landing Cease would make a lot of sense for this team. Alongside Walker Buehler and Bobby Miller, LA could have one of the better rotations in baseball again.

The team expects to add more pitching to the rotation, even if they do land a trade for Cease. The Dodgers want to turn a weakness from last season into a true strength of this team once again.
