Dodgers Trade Rumors: Another Report Links LA to Brewers’ Shortstop Willy Adames

All offseason, there has been some thought that the Dodgers could upgrade the shortstop position. After all, the team added plenty of talent to the mix already, but the front office remained committed to seeing how Gavin Lux would be coming off a torn ACL.

Lux tore his ACL in Spring Training last year but has been expected to take over the shortstop spot this year. However, things haven’t quite gone his way through the first part of spring, at least on the defensive side of the field.

Los Angeles isn’t worried about the bat with Lux, as he is hitting .348 with three runs batted in over 23 at-bats. But his defense has left a lot to worry about, especially the throw from shortstop to first base.

Naturally, there will be a grace period for any player who is coming off a major injury similar to what Lux suffered. But the Dodgers don’t have time for mistakes, and manager Dave Roberts was noncommittal to ensuring Lux’s job was secure.

This has brought back up the idea of an upgrade, with Los Angeles being linked to a familiar name. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal appeared on the Foul Territory show and brought up Willy Adames from the Milwaukee Brewers as a potential trade target for L.A.

Adames has been connected with the Dodgers for a few years, but Milwaukee would have to be willing to play ball on a trade.

“We’ve talked about Willy Adames with them for ever. My understanding is that while the Dodgers might want Willy Adames, the Brewers might not want to trade Willy Adames. There’s always a price … for every player but right now it just seems they’re going to have to see what happens with Lux for the next couple of weeks, and maybe go with Rojas and Kiké to start the season and figure it out as they go along.”

Bringing in Adames would help shore up the shortstop position, but it would also mean that Los Angeles was effectively giving up on Lux. The former top prospect for the Dodgers still has tremendous upside, but the Dodgers may need to move on if he can’t figure his defense out.

Luckily for the Dodgers, they have options. They have others who can play the shortstop position such as Miguel Rojas, Chris Taylor or Kiké Hernández if Lux isn’t starting on Opening Day.

But the teams’ interest in Adames doesn’t seem to be going away, which is something that could drag out until the trade deadline.

  1. Lux is coming off a substantial injury and shouldn’t rush him. Hernandez and Rojas can both play S. S. and let Lux rehab in AAA or some where.

    1. The team won 100 games last year without Lux. They added about 60 HRS with Ohtani and Hernandez.
Why is Lux being treated like a first ballot HOFer? If pitchers need to slow walk their way back to the roster, thank let Lux do the same.

Besides, the iNF defense will be horrible with Betts and Lux- and the additonal errors and pitch count will cause a real problem for the pitching staff.

  2. Never understood the fascination with Lux. LA moved on from Seager and Turner, both better defenders than Lux (and neither would be confused with Ozzie Smith) and so superior on the offensive side, without seemingly batting an eye. SS is the weakest link to the current team makeup so why not make an offer for Adames that Brewers couldn’t pass on?

  3. Why trade for Adames?. You have a better hitter with superior defensive skills in Miguel Rojas. You still keep Lux with his offense.

  4. It appears that shortstop COULD be a problem. I don’t like the “wear and tear” on Mookie. However, to me, it seems that the Dodgers have a more serious problem. The Dodgers have a number of pitchers with arm injuries. This is not just right now but for the last several years. The problems are not only with the major league roster but throughout the minors. To paraphrase John Madden, “if a problem continues for an extended period of time, it is more than a coincidence”. Should the Dodger organization do something differently with their entire pitching philosophy? Just a thought.

  5. Yes and yes! For an org that spends so much and collects so much data – it is shocking that the arm injuries are so serious and frequent. it just seems every pitcher has to be penciled in with a year off for TJ or a shoulder repair. One thing I heard a minor league manager once say is PITCHERS DON’T RUN ENOUGH. He said that you pitch with your arm for the half of the game and with the legs – in the second half.

I also think there is a league wide approach to the MENTAL side of pitching. If you keep treating a pitcher like they can’t go more than 6 innings – or goodness sake – three times through the lineup – well THEN HE WON’T LEARN HOW. Sheesh!
Why not just 7 inning games and the pitchers MIGHT once get a complete game!

  6. I have seen enough of Lux through the yeas he has been with the team and he is not cut out to be a Dodger. In every game he plays there’s always a negative happening that costs extra outs and runs. Making excuses and feeling sorry for yourself is not a major league player. Brain fog and nonchalant playing needs to be replaced with a more trusted player, especially for a Dodger.
Make a one for one trade with Milwaukee for Adames as both players need a different scenery. Could be a new start for Lux as his hometown is from that area.
