New Dodgers Prospect Explains Nuclear Engineering/Baseball Link

The newest acquisition for the Los Angeles Dodgers has a unique background. While Andre Lipcius was playing baseball at the University of Tennessee, he was majoring in Nuclear Engineering.

Lipcius believes his studies helped tremendously with the mental side of the game.

“I think taking those classes, and that major, helped me be a better learner when it comes to coaches saying something or figuring out a pitcher. Stuff like that, I can learn quickly and be able to think and put things through my mind really fast. It just spits out an output, which makes it easier for me when I get in the box. I’ve already put in all the information, then I have one simple plan once I get to the plate.”

Lipcius was selected in the third round of the 2019 draft, and is joining a new organization for the first time in his career. The Tigers designated Lipcius for assignment last week and traded him to the Dodgers for cash considerations on Monday. The Dodgers placed Clayton Kershaw on the 60-day injured list to make room for Lipcius on their 40-man roster.

So far, Lipcius’ major league experience consists of 38 plate appearances over 13 games with the Tigers last year, hitting .286/.342/.400.

Lipcius still has a few option years left, which will allow the Dodgers to start his season in the minors, and call him up when needed throughout the season.
