Dodgers vs Giants: Lineups, Pregame Matchups, and More for September 5

After their first three-game losing streak in nearly three months, the Dodgers bounced back in a big way to take the last two games of their three-game series with the Padres over the weekend.

Los Angeles now welcomes the rival Giants to Dodger Stadium with a chance to officially dethrone San Francisco atop the NL West. The Giants, who won 107 games last year to break the Dodgers’ eight-year division title streak, will be eliminated from contention in the division with even one loss in this series.

The Giants still have something to fight for, although their chances are slim. They currently sit eight games out of the third and final Wild Card spot, so a Dodgers sweep could literally end their division chase and effectively end their playoff hopes entirely.

Game one of the series will pit Andrew Heaney against Logan Webb. The two faced off on August 1, with the Dodgers knocking Webb around for six runs in five innings. Heaney went just four innings, taking a no-decision in the Dodgers’ 8-2 win.

Wilmer Flores is 4-for-8 with a homer in his career against Heaney, while Brandon Crawford is 3-for-6 with a double. No one on the current Giants team has even 10 career plate appearances against the Dodgers lefty.

On the other side, nine current Dodgers — yes, the nine you’re thinking of — have at least 14 PAs against Webb. Max Muncy (two homers, 1.117 OPS), Mookie Betts (.471 AVG, 1.029 OPS), and Freddie Freeman (.467 AVG, 1.000 OPS) are the most notable standouts against the tough righty.

Tonight’s lineup looks a little different from usual in some ways. The top three in the order are as expected, but Mookie gets the start at second base again. Will Smith sits and Austin Barnes bats ninth and catches Heaney. Miguel Vargas is the designated hitter for the evening while Joey Gallo, Cody Bellinger, and Trayce Thompson patrol the outfield.

Today’s game will mark the 134th game of the season for LA. They are currently 92-41, on pace for just over 112 wins. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 pm PT.
