Will Smith’s Contract Extension With Dodgers Has Deferred Money: Report

Will Smith and the Dodgers agreed to a 10-year, $140 million contract extension on Wednesday to keep the All-Star catcher in Los Angeles for the next decade.

While the Dodgers have already announced the extension (and had a press conference with Smith), the full contract details have not yet been revealed.

However, more information is starting to get uncovered regarding the massive extension.

The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya has reported that Smith’s extension has 32 percent deferred money, which totals about $44.8 million.

Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times also reported that Smith’s contract extension has a $30 million signing bonus that will be paid off in the first two years. It also does not have any opt-out clauses.

It’s not yet known how the deferred money will work, but Smith now joins a long list of Dodgers with deferred money in their contracts.

While Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernández all have deferred money, no one has more than Shohei Ohtani, who deferred all but $20 million of his $700 million deal.

Will Smith Reacts to Contract Extension With Dodgers

Smith and the Dodgers held a press conference on Wednesday after the extension was officially signed.

Smith said he loves being a Dodger, and talked about the winning culture being a big reason he wanted to sign a long-term extension.

Earlier this spring, Smith told Dodgers Nation that he loved being in Los Angeles, but hadn’t yet had contract extension talks.

Clearly, the two sides were able to work quickly to get things done before domestic Opening Day.
