Chris Taylor Details What Makes Dave Roberts Great Manager for Dodgers

Dave Roberts is entering his ninth season as the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. In his eight years thus far, all the Dodgers have done is win. However, with just one World Series title to his name, Roberts continues to get tons of backlash from fans.

The players, however, tell a different story.

In an interview with our very own Doug McKain, Taylor detailed what makes Roberts such a great manager for the Boys in Blue.

“He’s been doing it for a long time. He knows how to deal with teams that have more than nine everyday players. He knows how to manage that and keep guys happy and guys that are used to playing every single day that come to us and that’s not always the case. It can be a tricky situation to deal with that because everybody wants to be out there everyday. It’s not an easy job he has, and I think he does a pretty good job of that.”

Roberts has done a stellar job at the helm in Los Angeles. He’s led the Dodgers to a 753-442 record, a .630 win percentage, and seven National League West titles. He ranks fourth in Los Angeles Dodgers manager wins, trailing only Hall of Famers Wilbert Robinson, Tommy Lasorda, and Walter Alston. Roberts is already in insane company in Dodger lore, and there’s no sign of that stopping anytime soon.

The 51-year-old and former National League Manger of the Year is big on communication and being personable, according to Taylor.

“He’s pretty laid back and he’s always, everyday he tries to say hello to every single person on the team. When he comes on the field, he makes sure he’s present. He makes sure he’s reaching out to every single guy. And I think that’s important to have that communication each and every day. We all have a mutual respect in the clubhouse.”

The players and Dodgers’ organization loves Roberts, that’s for sure. Will the entire fan base ever reciprocate those feelings? Maybe with a couple more World Series titles.

  1. Thank you CT3! I’m glad a player finally detailed why Dave Roberts is great for this team. He gets WAY too much hate for the playoff disappointments. He’s not the one giving up runs left and right, going 1-21 in a series, going 0-30 with RISP in another series, kicking routine double play balls and hitting under .200 as a team in back to back World Series. Is he the best game manager? Absolutely not. Does he deserve some blame for the postseason losses? Absolutely. He has made some awful decisions but “fans” acting like it’s all his and Kenley’s fault for the Postseason disappointments is one of the most pathetic and idiotic things I’ve ever seen.

Dave Roberts is head and shoulders above any other manager in terms of player/clubhouse management. And if you don’t think that matters all you have to do is look down to San Diego to see that it does indeed matter a lot. That’s what I think a lot of these “fans” miss. They scream and yell for Dave Roberts to be fired but I’ve yet to see one person mention an actual, realistic candidate that would be better. Dave Roberts is the perfect manager for a team with the level of talent the Dodgers have. Nobody manages egos better than Dave Roberts. You all need to stop blaming the manager for the players constantly coming up short.

  2. Roberts is a terrible so called manager, with all the TALENT this guy has to work with he is a loser! Almost any manager would have done more than he has. You want a Good, or Great manager Just look at what Bochy has done in his tenure. Look what he just did with Rangers. Even more with the Giants who weren’t a great talent team. With Roberts track record, any other manager would have been let go, long ago. But we are stuck with this so called puppet.

    1. Can you say Bobby Cox is a terrible manager as well? 10 straight NL east titles, 3 NL pennants, only one WS title? As much as I want to see more WS titles for the boys in blue, I’m happy that every year the team is competitive and pushing to get to the cluster-F called MLB postseason.
