Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Talks About the Growth of Veteran Voices in this Newer Clubhouse

Dave Roberts praised Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Jason Heyward, and Miguel Rojas for their leadership roles in the Dodgers new clubhouse this season.

“I would say Mookie, Freddie, Jason, Rojas have probably been the guys that have taken a step maybe out of their comfort zone to make sure everyone is buying into what we’re doing,” Roberts said.

Roberts knows these veterans go out of their comfort zone to lead the team, and he appreciates their extraordinary effort to make the Dodgers one cohesive unit.

“I heard a little incident where Jason called a player out and said, ‘We don’t do things this way,'” Roberts said. “Rojas, after we got our butts handed to us in the Kansas City series, got the guys together in a hitters meeting and addressed how we need to do the little things, play with more urgency. I appreciated that. Jason Heyward getting pinch-hit after hitting a three-run homer in Baltimore and not saying a peep. Lance Lynn coming along and T take the ball from the fifth inning and he says, ‘Whatever you need, I’ll be ready to go my next turn.’ And so those things that we get veteran guys that do that, everyone has to follow.”

Roberts loves this team, and even went as far as saying they’re the favorite team he’s coached since coming to Los Angeles in 2016.

“We’ve raised the bar on not only talent, but also character in our organization,” Roberts said. “And I like the way that the bar has been raised.”

This year’s Dodger team has both incredible talent and character, and the 1988 Dodgers had the same combination. We all know what happened in 1988.

  1. I have been a fan since ’47. It’s not easy following the Dodgers from Tx compared to when they were in Brooklyn & I was in NJ. This team is so much fun to watch & follow. I think Dave Roberts & Andrew Friedman are management @ the finest. I don’t know if they are going all the way but I am so proud of the entire team.
