Dodgers News: JD Martinez Not Out of the Woods with Groin Injury

Going into the postseason, the Los Angeles Dodgers need their professional DH J.D. Martinez. He’s a big reason the offense is able to be so dominant being Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman.

Despite missing 40 games this season, Martinez has 31 home runs and a legitimate shot to get 100 RBI before Sunday.

Martinez spent most of August dealing with a complex puzzling groin injury. Since his return, he has been an incredible run producer. He was even named the National League Player of the Week for this past week.

There is a possibility of his groin injury returning. However, Martinez brushed that possibility off.

“I definitely still feel it from time to time,” Martinez said, “but the biggest thing for me is playing — I’m at my best when I’m in there every day. The off-and-on stuff, it’s kind of worn me down. It’s really hurt me as far as my performance on the field. It’s hard to get in a groove not knowing where my body is every day because I’m not in there every day. I’ve just got to stay on top of my rehab and exercises and keep my fingers crossed that everything is good going forward.”

Because the Dodgers need to rely on strong offensive production to have any success during the postseason, Dave Roberts needs to balance playing time with rest for Martinez. Many players injure themselves at Coors Field since maintaining proper hydration because of the high altitude is impossible. Roberts may want to consider giving Martinez some rest during the Colorado series.

Thus, Martinez will lessen the risk of injury, and he can play during the San Francisco series to prepare for the postseason.

However, Martinez has said he wants to continue playing every day to stay in a rhythm, so we’ll have to see what Roberts and the Dodgers decide to do.
