Dodgers News: Miguel Vargas Keeping His Confidence Through Prolonged Slump

The Dodgers have had their ups and downs this season. It’s a part of the game and it happens for a team throughout the grueling 162-game season. Individual players are going to have highs and lows as well, but it’s how they manage through them that defines a player. For Dodgers rookie infielder Miguel Vargas, he is doing his best to manage things as he goes through a long slump at the plate

Vargas has improved defensively, which is great for his chances at remaining as the team’s second baseman, but his struggles at the plate have severely brought his batting average down. He has been given the support of manager Dave Roberts but Vargas knows that he needs to get things going otherwise he could be removed from the lineup completely.

“I feel like I’m seeing pitchers well, but I’ve been missing a lot of pitches in the zone,” Vargas said. “Sometimes in the big leagues, you only get one pitch, and if you miss it, it sucks. But I don’t feel like I’ve lost my confidence, and that’s what matters for me.”

For Vargas, he knows that he can’t lose his confidence otherwise he will lose his game completely. Coming into this season, the team was very high on him and they were expecting big results from the young infielder.

On the year, Vargas is only hitting .199 with seven home runs and 31 runs batted in entering Saturday. Over his last 10 games, Vargas only has two hits total. It hasn’t been pretty for him at the plate but he is pushing through in the best way he can. Roberts gave his thoughts on the issues Vargas is having at the plate.

“I think once you start to struggle, you start to press a little bit, you try to get things back in one game, one at bat, and then it just snowballs,” Roberts said. “It’s not just young players — it happens to veteran players, too — but it’s more magnified for a younger player. Hopefully this little reset will [help him] get back on track.”

The Dodgers need Vargas to get back on track. He is an important piece for their club going forward and they could use his bat in the lineup. He was one of their best pure hitters in the farm system but it hasn’t translated to the big leagues yet.

However, he is still very talented and has time to adjust. And like Vargas, his teammates aren’t losing confidence. First baseman Freddie Freeman even chimed in on the young player.

“Miguel is a really good hitter,” Freeman said. “He’ll be fine.”

  1. Vargas is a Bust! Pressure on being on this team seems to be too much for him!! Might do better somewhere else (Smaller market)!! Not impressive at all!!!
