Gavin Lux Trying to Clear Final Mental Hurdle to Fully Take Off This Season for Dodgers

Los Angeles Dodgers’ Gavin Lux made strides in his hitting performance this week, recording his first multi-hit game in April on Wednesday during the Dodgers’ 11-2 win over the Washington Nationals. Lux earned two hits as well as two RBIs. He now is up to a .183 batting average and five RBIs.

Lux has gotten off to a slow start, but this game was good progress for him as he continues to find his groove. For Lux, the key to getting back to his expected level of production is to move past his mental barriers.

“I just got to get my brain to say, ‘F— it, it’s fine. Just go. Turn it and burn it, because it’s fine.’ We’re working on that, just trying to get over that hump. You’ve got to f—ing find a way to still perform when your brain’s still telling you to be safe.”

The good news for Lux is the Dodgers are being extra patient with him since he is coming back from a torn ACL. Manager Dave Roberts said earlier this week they would give Lux 150 at-bats before evaluating him.

“Obviously we all want to perform and put up good numbers and help the team win. But realistically, you got to take a process-oriented approach when you miss a year and a half full of at-bats. So it’s tough, but you’ve just got to keep grinding. You have no other option anyways. So just keep putting in the work in the cage and hopefully it will eventually translate. That’s all you can really control.”
