Dodgers News: Scout Shocked by Surprising Issue for LA This Postseason

Since the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles in 1958, having excellent starting pitching has been their landmark. Only three years ago, the Dodger starting rotation won their first world championship in 32 years. This past season everything that could go wrong to the starting rotation did, and the Dodgers were forced to rely on rookie starters, who could have benefited from having extra time at AAA.

The way things came undone for LA this season and in October was shocking to some, including at least one scout who spoke with Jack Harris of the LA Times.

“The biggest issue was the pitching,” one rival scout said. “It’s amazing how it just fell apart on them.”

Andrew Friedman tried to build starting pitching depth before spring training began, but nothing worked well for the team in 2023. Noah Syndergaard was signed but put together the worst 12 starts in Dodger history. The expectations riding on both Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin blew up as both pitchers elbows blew out.

The Dodgers thought Walker Buehler could return to the team in the late season to help with the postseason, but he couldn’t bounce back after an outing. In late June, Clayton Kershaw injured his left shoulder. In August, he returned, but he wasn’t dominating.

Bobby Miller, Emmet Sheehan, and Ryan Pepiot pitched satisfactorily but weren’t ready for the postseason.

No one could have predicted Julio Urías would get arrested again for suspected domestic violence and missed the month of September and the postseason.

So What Comes Next for the Dodgers Pitching Staff?

With an excellent young nucleus of young starters, Friedman vowed to look at every available starter this offseason as the team is expected to be in the market for one or two arms. The Dodgers need a strong starting rotation to be competitive and get over the hump that’s stopped them in their tracks over the last three postseasons.
