Max Muncy, Walker Buehler React to Shohei Ohtani’s Contract With Dodgers

Almost everyone had the same reaction when the news dropped about Shohei Ohtani signing his record contract with the Dodgers. “Wow.”

His 10-year,$700 million deal with L.A. is still the talk of the baseball world, almost a week later.

The amount of money is pretty much unheard of, but Ohtani is unlike any player that we have ever seen. Plus, we learned that he did agree to defer all but $2 million of the annual salary each season until after the conclusion of the deal. This allows the Dodgers to spend a lot more during the time he will be with the team.

Dodgers starting pitcher Walker Buehler appeared on “The Just Baseball Show” podcast to discuss the contract. He didn’t seem surprised by the figures whatsoever.

“I told you guys — $35-million pitcher, $35-million hitter,” Buehler said. “There’s never been anyone like him. He does both at a very high level. He’s the biggest free agent in sports, ever, so it makes a lot of sense.”

Buehler now gets an up close and personal look at the biggest free agent in sports, something I’m sure he is excited about. While Ohtani won’t be pitching in 2024, he will likely hang out with the pitching staff to start learning how L.A. does everything to prepare for 2025.

The veteran starter will be making his own return to the mound this season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and maybe he can share some tips with Ohtani. Both players have had multiple major surgeries, so they can work together to work through the recovery process.

Buehler wasn’t the only member of the team to react to this record contract. During an appearance on the “Foul Territory” podcast, Dodgers infielder Max Muncy had this to say about the contract that Ohtani signed.

“I didn’t have any details,” Muncy said, “but I saw 10 years, $700 million and thought, ‘Oh man, that’s a lot of money.’”

Clayton Kershaw was among the other players to react to the contract.

Both the Dodgers and Ohtani have put a lot of faith in one another, and they are hoping that it turns into multiple titles.
