Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts Addresses His Contract Situation

There’s been plenty of talk this winter about what the Dodgers will and won’t do in terms of their roster for the 2022 season. Will they re-sign legendary pitcher Clayton Kershaw? Will they bring back closer Kenley Jansen? Could they steal Freddie Freeman away from the Braves (and the Yankees)? All important questions, but one contract situation has flown under the radar. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is on the final year his contract.

Will the Dodgers offer Roberts an extension this spring to avoid an uncomfortable situation potentially poisoning the 2022 season?

In an interview with The Athletic’s Andrew McCullough, Roberts did not sound overly concerned about his contract status with the Dodgers.

“It’ll get done, it’ll get done.”

Roberts has many reasons to be confident. He’s helped guide the Dodgers to three World Series appearances in his seven years as LA’s skipper. The Dodgers have won the NL West every season with Doc sans 2021. LA has eclipsed 100 wins three times during Roberts tenure. In fact, he owns the best regular season winning percentage (.622) of any MLB manager, ever.

Dodgers fans will bemoan the facts above and point to the talented rosters Andrew Friedman has constructed. The masterful Friedman deserves his moment in the sun, but it doesn’t matter how powerful your boat is without a great captain.

The Dodgers president of baseball operations himself also hinted that Roberts will be managing in LA beyond 2022 last week.

“Doc has been a big part of our past success and I look forward to him being a big part of future success as well.”

Final Roberts Thoughts

As everyone knows by now, MLB players cannot sign extensions, sign free agent deals, nor be traded during the ongoing MLB lockout. For managers however, it’s business as usual. Roberts and LA’s front office are free to call, text, Zoom, FaceTime, sophomore signal, etc. each other as much, or as little, as they please.

Roberts’ comments suggest that there have been discussions between he and the Dodgers brass about an extension.

Doc isn’t on the Mount Rushmore of MLB managers, but the Dodgers would be foolish to not extend him.

Argue about Roberts all you want, but one thing is for sure: Andrew Friedman and the Dodgers aren’t fools.
