Dodgers News: Miguel Vargas Could Return to Lineup on Friday, Still Dealing With Soreness

Dodgers starting second baseman Miguel Vargas is out of the lineup again on Thursday, as he recovers from the right thumb injury he suffered after getting hit with a pitch in Monday’s game. Vargas missed Tuesday’s game, and remains out on Thursday. However, Vargas spoke to reporters ahead of Thursday’s game in Arizona, and said his thumb is starting to feel better.

He said it’s still sore, but he took some swings, and would be ready to pinch hit on Thursday if the team needed it (per Juan Toribio of MLB.com).

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts spoke to reporters on Thursday, as well, and reportedly made it sound like Vargas could be back in the lineup as soon as Friday (per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic).

It’s nice to hear that Vargas is doing okay, as the last thing this team needs is another injury to an infielder. They’ve already had to manage without starting shortstop Miguel Rojas, who has missed the last two games with a minor groin strain. That’s put Chris Taylor in at shortstop, while Mookie Betts has filled in as the second baseman.

Hopefully, Vargas continues progressing, and gets back in the lineup on Friday, as Roberts hinted at. The rookie has been one of the tougher outs on the Dodgers this year, slashing .375/.722/.500 with a double, an RBI and a league-leading nine walks.

He’s also played an impressive second base thus far, and will only get better the more time he gets out there.
