Dodgers Highlights: Bobby Miller is Him, Offense Erupts in W

The Dodgers got just what the doctor ordered out of rookie sensation Bobby Miller who battled to deliver 6 scoreless innings against the Phillies in Philadelphia. J.D. Martinez and David Peralta hit homers and Messrs Betts and Freeman drove in runs to help LA earn win number 37 on the season. Andre Jackson took down the final 3 innings to earn the save.

Let’s get into the highlights!

The game was scoreless for the first two innings. The feat was more impressive for Bobby Miller who escaped a bases loaded jam in the 2nd. The Dodgers got on the board in the 3rd, plating 2 runs with 2 outs. James Outman and Mookie Betts hit back to back doubles and Freddie Freeman singled home Mookie.

They added another in the 4th on David Peralta’s 4th home run of the season.

Meanwhile, Bobby Miller was exceptional from the 3rd inning on. He faced two batters over the minimum from the 3rd-6th innings, striking out 7 total on the afternoon while throwing a career-high 104 pitches

His season ERA is now down to 0.78 and he’s in the midst of a 16 inning scoreless streak.

Per LA Dodgers PR, Bobby Miller is the 9th pitcher since 1901 to allow 2 runs or fewer over his first 4 career starts combined (minimum 20 IP). There are two other Dodgers on the list, joining Fernando Valenzuela in 1981 and Kenta Maeda in 2016.

The Dodger bats got back to work in the top of the 7th inning, plating 6 runs on a Betts single, a Will Smith ground out, a wild pitch on a walk to Max Muncy, and a 3 run homer by J.D. Martinez.

Here’s what the inning looked like:

  • Jason Heyward pop out
  • Chris Taylor single, stolen base
  • James Outman walk
  • Mookie Betts RBI single, Taylor scores, Outman to 3B
  • Freddie Freeman hit by pitch, bases loaded
  • Will Smith RBI ground out to 3B, Outman scores
  • Max Muncy walks, Betts scores on a wild pitch
  • J.D. Martinez 3 run home run
  • David Peralta double
  • Heyward ground out to 2B

The Phillies used 3 pitchers in the inning.

9-0 Dodgers heading to the bottom of the 7th.

Andre Jackson, who was called up before the game, came on in relief of Miller and added 3 scoreless innings to end the game and earn his 2nd save of the year and 4th of his career. He also struck out 3 Phillies to give the Dodgers 10 Ks on the day and fans a free hamburger tomorrow.

Quote of the Game

“Man, he’s the guy. Every time he steps on the mound, he’s on fire and doing his job. I’m glad he’s on our side. I don’t want to face him. He’s got nasty stuff.” – David Peralta after the game.

Up Next

The Dodgers look to take the series with a win to finish up a 3-3 road trip. Dave Roberts will turn to a bullpen game after Julio Urias was unable to come off the injured list in time to make the start. With Miller and Jackson eating up 9 innings on Saturday, the bullpen will be fully rested.
